RevisitingtheStress-Induced Birefringence in Polarization-Maintaining Fibers

چکیده
Two conventional errors in the stress-induced birefringence (SIB) of polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs) are revealed and corrected. The first issue refers to fundamental expression its calculation SIB, which depends on selection stress components. There were obvious inconsistencies two pioneering reports, while both widely applied subsequent works. second is basic form Airy function (ASF) cross-section plane PMF, dominates complexity for SIB. ASFs early works different, led different expressions Both cannot be reproduced, calculated results just around 1/2 corresponding measurements. In this paper, issues have been fixed by revising definition SIB proposing a new ASF PMFs. developed theory simple does not any mathematical contradiction process, compare reported Results revised based achieve good agreement with practical experimental

Uncertainty of the Sagnac interferometer-based measurement of the modal birefringence of polarization maintaining optical fibers
Presented is an analysis of the expanded uncertainty of an indirect measurement of modal birefringence of polarization maintaining fibers, based on the Sagnac interferometer and an optical spectrum analyzer. By using this method it is easy to achieve an expanded measurement uncertainty considerably lower than 1%, at a confidence level of 0.95, in measurements of fibers, whose birefringence is i...
متن کاملAccurate method for measuring the thermal coefficient of group birefringence of polarization-maintaining fibers.
We present a method to accurately measure the group birefringence variation with temperature in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers using a distributed polarization analyzer. By analyzing polarization cross-talk peaks purposely induced at both ends of a PM fiber, the temperature coefficient of group birefringence can be accurately obtained. We confirm the theoretical predict...
متن کاملPolarization decorrelation in optical fibers with randomly varying birefringence.
Polarization decorrelation in single-mode fibers with randomly varying birefringence is studied. We find that decorrelation length is minimized for a given beat length if the average autocorrelation length of the birefringence is close to the average beat length. The differential time delay between the polarization modes is found to depend on the autocorrelation length of the birefringence rath...
متن کاملPolarization decorrelation in optical fibers with randomly varying elliptical birefringence.
Polarization decorrelation in single-mode fibers with randomly varying elliptical birefringence is studied. It is found that the effects of ellipticity on the polarization decorrelation length depend on the relative sizes of the beat length and the autocorrelation length of the birefringence fluctuations in the fiber. However, the evolution of the differential group delay remains unaffected by ...
متن کاملPolarization evolution and dispersion in fibers with spatially varying birefringence
Received August 13, 1993; revised manuscript received December 15, 1993 A procedure is described that allows one to solve the evolution equations in birefringent optical fibers by using repeated diagonalization. With this approach several practical problems are solved in a unified way. Included are evolution in twisted fibers, sinusoidally rocked fibers, and fibers with randomly varying birefri...
